The locking mechanism of my four-drawer lateral filing cabinet will not release, when the key is turned to Unlock. The mechanism moves toward unlocking, but the key meets resistance just before the full-unlock position.

Key can be removed from Unlock position, but all drawers are still held closed. Can hear a "thunk" when key is turned back to Open, and can see mechanism moving between lip of top drawer and edge of cabinet above the lock.

I declined locksmith's telephone advice to drill out lock, as I don't believe there would be room to maneuver mechanism through small lock hole.

Used a screwdriver to slip the vertical release on each side. Turns out that the horizontal release bar connecting the lock cylinder and the side vertical drawer-release bars had come out on both sides, probably during a recent office move with the mover used one of those suction-type filing cabinet lifters that lifts full filing cabinets.
