Just one query, Richard: in bevel up planes, is jointer plane camber youtube any disadvantage to replace the A2 irons with the O1 steel? Your hand plane can take on the role of scrub, fore, jointer, smoother and everything in between once you understand that cutting edge. The company was closed If your bench is a featherweight, use cast-iron weights or sandbags to keep it from sliding around your shop. As I am sure you already know the blade is really thick but of great quality. Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment.

Regarding the handle that was my first thought too. But let's see what the others are saying ;- Cheers, Stefan.

I have seen somewhere somebody using a plastic foil to get glue in a split. Maybe a syringe and liquid glue? Maybe just one dowel on the broken side and it should never broke again. Now looking P. How long is your plane?

Hi Sylvain, a method I have used several times to get glue into a split is to use dental floss. Give it a try. It is strong enough to bring it to task and fluffy enough to spread the glue. The plane is about mm. But I will double check it. The purpose of the camber is clear. Question is if it make sense to have a cambered iron in a jointer. I guess it depends on how one will use it. Cheers, Stefan. Thin cyanoacrylate glue in crack followed by activator would be what I would try.

If that doesn't fix the problem you can always do the more labor intensive repair. In a worst case scenario You can always tell the 'Frau' its cheaper then going to the gym :. I think to make a new handle is not necessary at this point in time. I will try the one or the other proposal from all of the great comments. Great find on the jointer plane. Be very careful if you try to open up the gap a little because the forward part of the handle has a small amount of wood and the top of the handle could pop right off.

Hi Matt, thanks for the hint. I see that problem too. Pretty sure trying to squeeze glue inside the crack by opening it Jointer Plane Iron Angle Youtube a little would result in breaking off the top part. I would then attempt a clean break to remove the top part altogether. Dowel would not be necessary, but you may want to drill a hole and put in a small nail instead of a dowel I would use epoxy and never worry about it anymore Yes, a small camber is normal on some jointer see Chris Schwarz take on it i just relieve the corners slightly on mine Bob.

Hi Bob, I understand. Even if the split already opens slightly I have the same fear, that the top will break. But in case of the top would have been removed and I could glue it back on. Leider hatte ich noch keine Gelegenheit da mal reinzuschauen. Mir ist also schon klar warum die Dimensiion bei deutschen Hobel gleich sind. That's one reason why the planes are looking somehow similar.

The good thing is that the plane irons and the wedges are interchangeable. Nice plane. I would saw right down through the split with a thin saw. That way both the glue surfaces inside would be clean. I would then glue in a small piece of veneer of the right thickness.

This way there should be no more stress left in the handle. If there happens to be 70 feet between waves, then the 60 ft. The hills and valleys in the wood can be seen as the waves in water, even though they are obviously much smaller. The concept, though, is Jointer Plane Blade Camber Year similar. Beyond the flattening role of this plane, it can handle other work as well. For those not familiar, there are plans showing how to make a shooting board available for download at the Lie-Nielsen website.

Shooting can work on end grain to sneak up on the exact dimension a thousandth of an inch or so at a time , can work on long grain, or with fence modifications, can shoot angles miters other than 90 degrees on the ends of boards.

The Jointer plane is set up similarly to most of the other bench planes. The blade should be razor sharp which is the same on all cutting tools , and many will want to apply a small camber curvature across the width of the iron.

This small cambering prevents the all-dreaded plane tracks, which are left when the corner s of the iron cut deeper into the wood than the surface adjoining it. The shaving thickness should be in the 4 — 5 thousands of an inch range, and so the camber should be sufficient that neither of the corners will make contact with this thickness of shaving.

The true difference in these planes is in their intended use, and therefore in their sharpening and setup. The jointer plane, on the other hand, while resembling the try plane in appearance and length, is actually a joinery plane, not a surfacing plane like the try plane.

With this in mind, it makes more sense for a jointer plane to have a straight iron like other joinery planes e. Do not, however, confuse jointing the edge with truing the edge. If an edge needs to be squared to a true 90 degrees for example, the front of a case which will have a face frame applied , a try plane with a cambered blade will actually make the process easier.

This process continues until the higher corner has been lowered sufficiently to make the edge square. On the other hand, when making a joint between two boards, one wants a flat edge for gluing. This is the purpose of the jointer plane.

Jointed edges need not be a perfect 90 degrees if the two boards are match planed. When match planing, the show faces of the two boards to be joined are placed together and the mating edges are planed at the same time. When planed together, the boards can be opened like a book and the angles of the edges will be complimentary to each other, resulting in a flat panel.

Perfect 90 degree edges are not necessary. A cambered iron cannot make this joint as well as a straight iron. Hopefully, this clears up some of the confusion surrounding the try plane. You can see now that a 7 and 8 can both actually make very nice try planes or jointer planes.

It all comes down to how you set up the iron. Tag: Hand Planes. I'm a passionate woodworking enthusiast of over 30 years, with an interest in the methods of pre-industrial joiners and cabinetmakers.
