After kicking it around for months and looking at powermatic, Nova and others I settled on the Jet VS from woodcraft. I could not be happier with this lathe.

Solid quality throughout. Very heavy. Never bogs down, no matter what kind of hardwood you turn. Motor is very quiet. And ZERO vibration. Great lathe. My only complaint is I wish the bed was a true "21 inches". Its actually more like 18". Of course this can be remedied by purchasing the extension. But all in all, a great buy and addition to my woodshop.

I didnt give it a great review , it was noisy , would not turn a spindle round, door to pulleys didnt match the lathe body , i carried it back to dealer , he gave me a new lathe , same model. It has been a great lathe. I have turned hours on it , little pieces to big as I could fit on it. I guess there is a bummer in every piece of equipment , but it is certainly not this lathe.

I've had this lathe for over a year now and I have pushed it every way I could think of. I've turn 5" stock coffee table legs 16" long. It has had to problem turning a 12" diameter bowl. The reverse on the lathe has been useful for sanding grain in the opposite direction to achieve a smoother finish, and for threading dowels.

After purchasing the one way bowl saver mini I've cut bowls out of cherry burls making the most out of my Burl. The slow speed is great for rough turning and the high speed allows me to get the most out of turning pens and bidding them. I've recently ordered the bed extensions and plan on turning 29" long 5" stock table legs and I have no doubt this lathe can't handle it.

This was my first midi lathe and after a dozen or so bowls and countless bottle stoppers I still love it. Plenty of power although i think inches was the largest diameter bowl I've done so far.

Occasionally I have to turn the spindle twice to get the locking pin to engage but no big deal; also the indexing pin is just above the wheel and I did get my fingers caught between them once or twice the first week I had the lathe, but now I avoid it without even thinking about it.

I would definitely recommend this lathe for a beginner or experienced turner. Some day I will likely invest in a larger lathe with outboard capability but this will suit my needs for years to come. ALL the nut plates in the legs had to be tapped-out and one of the main large bolts had to be re threaded because of damaged threads.

This was my first lathe. Mine requires moving the belt to change speeds, but that isn't difficult and it is something I don't change often. Minor consideration. I've made hundreds of items on this lathe and still love using it.

Really good value! I most certainly would recommend to a friend of family member, and have done so several times. Will be good for small diameter turns but not so much for large diameters. I was very dissapointed when this lathe with a 1 hp motor takes about three times as long to do the same job.

This lathe has served me great so far, i was glad I spent a little more money to get this one. Over ten bowls and a dozen pens turned and shes still running strong. I'm a beginner turner, so I don't have a lot to compare with, but I've been very happy so far. Tool rests are rock solid, quality construction, soft start, and very quiet. Belt changes are extremely easy and fast, although I don't find that I have to change belts very often as the range on the middle belt is good for most things I've done.

The overall wide range of speeds is excellent and I could see the slow speeds coming in handy for other hobbies I've played around with, like sanding handles for fly rods.

The digital RPM readout is handy for me since I don't have much experience turning and don't have a feel for speeds yet, so I find myself starting off at speeds based on recommendations from videos and books and adjust from there. The lathe was a bit on the high price end for me, and I definitely couldn't see paying that much for the stand, so I built my own.

It's working great and I get no noticable vibration even when turning some small bowls. Only negative I've found is the same as another reviewer, I have trouble matching up the locking pin to the hole in the shaft. Not a big issue, but takes a few aggrevating seconds to get it lined up. Minor issue at most. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and I'm really enjoying turning with it. Lots of good features, between centers distance long enough for chair builders, forward and reverse, digital read out, easy belt changes, variable speed, heavy cast iron, good price point, expandable to longer between center distance.

However, the manual writer was dyslexic and there was a big error in the layout page describing where to drill holes in your work bench to bolt down to reduce charter. You should measure the holes on the machine and not trust the manual. I use the lathe for home use, strickly as a hobby. The machine runs smooth and is easy to use. The only problem so far is the locking pin sometimes is a little difficult to engage.

That might seen mighty small to many of you but, I'm finding that I'm turning small things and would like an even smaller chuck.

I have a lot of 2x2 1. I've made pens and a few bowls and am enjoying that but, but, also want to be able to make other small things like ornaments. Anyone have a suggestion for a chuck that is good for 1" - 2" spigots? I know that Nova makes smaller jaw sets but, would prefer a complete chuck and not be swapping jaws back and forth. Besides, with a nova and adapter to fit the Jet 1"x8tpi threads I can not run lathe backwards for finishing.
