If it is the thickness and not the diameter, then a standard way of increasing the power handling ability of a pulley system is to go to multiple, side-by-side pulleys and multiple belts.

Perhaps you can do that. It would probably be easier than changing to a chain drive. I have also found that an occasional dose of belt dressing spray can help a lot with slipping.
