These two papers are the best for all-round work. They can both tackle almost any job and are very good on wood. I've found both Brilliant and Granat to be excellent papers. But I think you're getting a bit too worked up about the cost of sandpaper. There's no reason not to try out different types of paper yourself to see which one suits you best.

Plus, you can sand glue squeeze out and finishes without clogging. I know you mentioned sanding only wood, but you might find a need to sand a finish at some point. I set those grits up three years ago and still like the line up.

Kevin Stricker Posts: You can get away with skipping a grit if you want. Basically, each grit leaves a slightly different scratch pattern. Each finer grit is just removing the scratches left by the prior grit. IME, skipping grits just makes sanding take longer with a paticular grit.

Assume that you're always sanding in one kind of situation, let's say table tops. It seems to me that you will always use more of the starting coarsest grit, whatever that is, since the starting grit is smoothing the wood from some unsanded state to that grit's smoothness.

All other grits you use are just removing the scratches left by the previous grit. For example, if you start from , that first grit takes the work from unsanded to smoothness, and the amount of sanding required to get there may vary from project to project. When you change to , you're always sanding a surface and bringing it to smoothness.
