I really wanted butcher block counters, but even at IKEA (which seems to be the cheapest option around, after much researching), the countertops alone would have run me about $, not to mention the cost of transporting them here. The closest IKEA is a little over an hour away, and I have a tiny car, so it would have required a car rental and a headache and tears and all of a sudden butcher block felt a little out of range.  So I wanted cheap, fast wood counters that wouldn’t be too precious but would get the job done. I decided to check out the offerings at the local lumber yard, and found 2″ x 12″ x 12′ and 2″ x 6″ x 12′ fir framing lumber, priced at $ and $ per piece, respectively.
